Prevalence of Alcohol Consumption by Socio-demographic Factors in the Seoul Metropolitan Area.

Abstract
Increased by consumption of alcohol is related increased risk for hypertension, stroke, heart disease and certain cancers, liver cirrhosis. Alcohol is also frequently linked with injuries, especially motor vehicle accidents.
The objective of this study is to investigate the prevalence of alcohol consumption and related behaviors in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. The source of data is from the Health Behavior Survey incorporated with ¡®2001 Seoul Health Interview Survey¡¯. A stratified multistage probability sampling design was used in this study. The sample of this study consist of 25,000 households from 2,500 ED. A total number of 19,360 person persons aged 15 years and over was analyzed in this population-based survey. The survey yielded a response rate of 92.3% from the final sample 20,981 households.
Among Seoul citizens aged 15 years and over, 24.7% of males compared with 4.2% of females consumed alcohol frequently. Age-specific prevalence of frequent alcohol consumption was most prevalent in males aged between 40 and 19(31.8%), while in females the highest rate was seen in younger females aged between 20 and 29(7.0%).
Age-specific prevalence of binge drinking defined as almost everyday drinking, and heavy drinking defined as alcohol consumption of five or more alcoholic drinks on a single occasion is analyzed in this study.
Public health burden imposed by excessive alcohol intake should be reduced by implementing health promotion programs and related policies.
